Sunspot offers 'Food for Thought' lunch series by TIM BROUK
Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? Sunspot Natural Market, 500 W. Sagamore Parkway, has been offering the "Food for Thought" free lunch series every Tuesday since March. The lunch, usually consisting of coffee, tea or water, salad, bread, a main course, fruit and dessert, is prepared with ingredients and products found in the store. The store specializes in natural and organic foods. "We're sharing how good natural food can be," said Jack Konold, co-owner of Sunspot Natural Market. "Most gourmet foods served in the finest restaurants are natural." The lunches are first come, first serve and are open to the first 30 people who sign up. Konold recommends showing up early. Last Tuesday's lunch featured vegetarian lasagna, blood oranges and lemon wafers. Most of the food was wheat and gluten free to commemorate Celiac Disease Awareness Month. Chef Emily Stern has food allergies and usually creates dishes catered to those who cannot eat common ingredients such as wheat, dairy and meat. "I made the lasagna with rice noodles instead of traditional pasta," Stern said. Stern said in order to eat well, she had to learn to cook for herself, and she wants to pass on the idea that people can eat gourmet meals without sacrificing their health or diets. The lunches are always accompanied by speakers talking about the latest in food, nutrition and health. Last Tuesday, Mike Gibbs talked about skin care. This Tuesday, Purdue University's Laura Stevens will talk about treating ADD and ADHD with the right food. Joyce Davis, a nurse from Lafayette, is a regular at the "Food for Thoughts." After a few talks and healthy lunches, she is now a firm believer of organic food and treating medical conditions naturally. She said her favorite new food she tried was Rice Krispies treats made with brown rice syrup. Location: 500 W. Sagamore Parkway
